Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., on Thursday blamed the “climate crisis” for the landfall of Hurricane Helene, urging action to prevent further tragedies. The Category 4 hurricane wreaked havoc across the southern U.S. after its arrival on Thursday. Major airports like Miami International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport have warned via social media the weather could disrupt flight plans. The Biden administration approved emergency declarations in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia related to the storm. Sharing a radar image of the storm, Rep. Frost offered a prayer for those affected, while also blaming a changing climate for the weather. “Praying for all the Floridians in the panhandle,” he wrote. “The Climate Crisis is here. We must act to save lives.” The Sunshine State Democrat included a link to an article by NASA which predicted the world will begin to see more extreme weather because of climate change. “Due to global warming, global climate models predict hurricanes will likely cause more intense rainfall and have an increased coastal flood risk due to higher storm surge caused by rising seas,” the agency wrote. “Additionally, the global frequency of storms may decrease or remain unchanged, but hurricanes that form are more likely to become intense.” The stance echoes one taken by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who suggested in August a summer heat wave was caused by climate change. The claim, shared via X, cited forecasted temperatures of 105F in Philadelphia, 104F in Washington D.C., and 102F in St. Louis. Attached to the post was a report indicating […]
