Letter to the editor: One good snow year doesn’t debunk climate change

A recent letter by Terry Thoem, on March 25, 2025, suggested that because our county is having a decent snow year, “the climate change advocates are wrong.” This is misleading on many fronts. Summit County is doing well this year, but Colorado as a whole is below average . But this sort of thinking is generally irrelevant. One must look at and analyze decades of data (and the underlying reasons). Thoem observes that climate has always gone through cycles. Thanks to much scientific work (ice cores, for example) we know this to be true. The reasons are well understood, related to changes in Earth’s tilt angle. They are not random events, but have definite causes. Massive amounts of data together with theories that are well borne out by experiements (this is how science works) are convincing that our climate is warming and the cause is an excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere arising from human activity. One can claim that this is all a gigantic hoax. But the truth, and its serious consequences, will not be suppressed because of the beliefs of those who choose to ignore the data and the underlying science. Further, Thoem’s comments about snowpack are just wrong: details can be found at a site such as EPA.gov/climate-indicators/climate-change-indicators-snowpack, which shows the snowfall situation in the western U.S. over the last 63 years. One can debate fine points about the causes and the expected effects in coming decades. But to deny the existence of climate change because one county is having a good snow year is ridiculous. Further, there are reasons to believe a warming climate will increase precipitation in some areas as warmer air can hold more moisture.
