Renaming the Climate Change and Energy Network: Reflecting Purpose, Driving Impact

Climate change is no longer a distant threat – it’s a reality reshaping our world. From intense heatwaves to rising sea levels, the signs are everywhere. As we face this urgent challenge, it’s clear that tackling climate change requires a twofold strategy: mitigation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to navigate the inevitable changes already underway. Yet despite decades of pledges and progress, global emissions continue to rise, pushing us perilously close to exceeding the Paris Agreement targets. It’s a stark reminder: we must act boldly and decisively. That means doubling down on reducing emissions and preparing for both sudden climatic shocks and the slow-moving impacts of a changing climate. At IEMA, we’ve been stepping up. Our recent guidance on adaptation – such as the Practical Guidance for Practitioners and Skills for Adaptation – equips professionals with the skills to lead the way. But as our focus evolved, one thing became clear: our network’s name no longer captured our mission. “Climate Change and Energy” was too narrow. After thoughtful discussion, the steering group decided it was time for a change. In December 2024, the IEMA Policy and Practice Committee approved our new name: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation. This isn’t just a name change—it’s a statement of purpose. It reflects the urgent need to address climate change on both fronts and invites our members to join a network fully aligned with today’s challenges. We’re proud to champion this vital work, and we’re excited to move forward under a name that truly reflects our ambition and commitment. Together, let’s drive the change the world needs. To join the network, stay informed on latest developments, […]
